It’s the Difference between “Smoke Cleansing” and “Smudging”, Prayer Bead Style.
Yes, several cultures and religions have versions of Prayer Beads. Yes. It is ok to make your own Prayer Beads. Yes, it’s ok to make Pagan Prayer Beads. No. It’s not ok to make Pagan Rosaries.
No, the concept of using beads to pray cannot be appropriated. HOWEVER. Specific TYPES of Prayer Beads and their formatting, etc, CAN be.
No. Not all names for Prayer beads in other cultures translate to “Rosary”. Rosary is not a word that can be conflated with and used interchangeably with the names for other Prayer Bead types- like Xi Shu, Juzu, (japa) Mala, Misbaha, Tasbih, Komboloi, etc.
Each type of already existing cultural and religious prayer bead has specific bead counts, specific prayers they are used for, specific formats for the beading, specific symbolism, and their OWN names. A Rosary is ONE TYPE of prayer bead, specific to Catholicism and a few other denominations of Christianity.
How to make your own Pagan Prayer Beads without Appropriating:
- Don’t call it by the name of an already established cultural or religious name or type of Prayer Bead - Unless you actually are a member of that religious system creating one for use in the correct religious or cultural ways, with their correct prayers, etc, then you are not making one of them. Come up with a different name, or just call them “Prayer Beads”.
- Come up with your own numbering format, prayers and meanings - When I made my Prayer Beads for Het-Hert, I used numbers significant within the Kemetic practices. To be more specific, I used one bead for each of the 42 negative confessions, along with spacer beads for each of what I consider the 5 divine concepts (Ma’at, Tayet, Heka, Ba, and Ka) and two extra beads to represent the Henu motion you open the Senut ritual with, and end the Senut ritual with. I’m almost POSITIVE that it would not be hard for you to come up with your own number counts for your own Prayer Beads without appropriating specific cultural and religious formats.
Really, that’s all you have to do. It’s not difficult guys. Please stop.
